About Me

I'm so glad you've found your way to my blog, 7-Day Menu!  My name is Sarah Nicolet and I started this blog after my third child was born because it was so difficult to get food on the table every night!  In the new baby haze, I really struggled to make a grocery list and predict what my family would eat each week.  So, the blog was mostly for myself at the time.  Now, my hope is that friends of mine might feel encouraged or inspired to create their own meal plans after reading this blog!

What is your background?
Well, I'm currently a stay-at-home mother of three.  I have Annabelle (8), Emilie (5) and Zachary (3).  My husband, Alain (pronounced Alan. . . it's just the French spelling) works as a software engineer and we all live in the Atlanta area.  Most recently, I taught first grade in Atlanta Public Schools.  I've worked in the corporate world and also as a social worker in the foster care world.

Where are you from?
I was born near Chicago, IL, but moved when I was 11 to South Florida.  I spent most of middle school and high school in Stuart, FL.  Desperate to do something different once I graduated, I went to the University of West Florida in Pensacola as an Anthropology major!  I minored in Spanish and History and spent an entire summer in Costa Rica learning to speak Spanish!

How is it that you're writing a cooking blog?
I have always loved to cook.  It started with a passion for baking in middle school.  We moved to Florida after my 6th grade year and I was not so happy about moving to a brand new state in the middle of the summer with no friends.  So, I started exploring my mom's cookbooks and experimenting with baking.  I found that I enjoyed baking for my friends and family after a year or so and I've never looked back.

I didn't really enjoy cooking meals until after I got married in 2000.  I only had 2 or 3 recipes in my cooking arsenal pre-marriage, so I realized that I had to get my head in the game and find some new recipes once I was cooking for two.  In a matter of months (and some tutelage from my sweet friend, Maria), I really began to enjoy cooking.  Now, it's a passion for me and almost an artistic outlet (although I've never claimed to be an artist).  ;)

What's this Paleo Diet I've seen on your blog?
My husband follows a Paleo Diet.  For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, this is a diet that follows the premise that our bodies were not designed to digest the high-sugar, high-salt, processed foods that our culture is inundated with right now.  The basics of this diet involves going back to eating a diet that might be similar to our Paleolithic ancestors.  As an anthropology major, I was truly skeptical of this diet, but I think that the premise is solid about the foods that we should be eating.  So, Paleo says we should eat only lean, organic meats, fruits and veggies as much as possible.   The diet discourages all grain, most refined sugar, dairy, beans, and all processed foods.  Most people look at that list and say "OMG, that's all I eat!"  I hear you.  However, the amount of illnesses that come from the processed foods we eat is unreal and if you start to do a little research, you'll be astounded.  It's taken awhile for us to move towards this diet and we are not following it 100%.  I love to bake and I do not notice any issues my family has found with gluten, so I continue to use only whole wheat in my baking and I will continue to bake because I love it.  However, we are making better food choices, eating out less and eating delicious food!

I hope you get a chance to browse through my blog!  I'd love to hear from you with any ideas or inspirations.  Email me at: 7daymenu@gmail.com.
